Art Buyer Behavior
I am creating a series of cartoons expressing my observations on the art worls. I am calling it Gettin’ Fame’d, and here is the first installment. To explain this particular cartoon, I would say that we have all had times when we really didn’t understand buyer behavior. A couple years ago, I had created a work that hung in a local gallery for a seasonal show. It was priced in the $500 range. I wasn’t expecting it to sell in so short a time frame, but was amazed when what I would consider (not trying to offend) somewhat inferior work selling. In this case, I believe it was the price that was the selling point.
If I would have sold the painting for $100 I think things would have been different. Another painting that sold had a beautiful frame, I would have expected it to have cost the artist a couple hundred dollars just for the frame treatment. That painting sold for $100. I felt kind of sorry for the artist since they should have gotten more.
This cartoon expresses some of the confusion and insult at times at buyer behavior. I realize that as artists we must have a thicker skin and I am building on mine every day, but geez! I think that some buyers want something cheaper just to say that they bought something, maybe they don’t care about the work at all.
No feelings were injured at my lack of success, it just left me puzzling…
Hmmmm. Still thinking…. Nope, drawing a blank here. So I decided to express myself since I have a keen sense of humor and a good measure of cynicism.
